Increased Violence and Restrictions in the West Bank: A Humanitarian Crisis Under the Shadow of War
Hebron, one of the oldest cities in the West Bank, renowned for its ancient vineyards, is now at the heart of escalating violence. Since the outbreak of war in Gaza in October 2023, the West Bank has witnessed the deaths of 479 Palestinians, including 116 children, primarily at the hands of Israeli forces and settlers. This surge in violence, compounded by the harsh realities of occupation, has severely hindered access to healthcare for many Palestinians.
Checkpoints and Restrictions: A Daily Struggle for Survival
The West Bank, home to over 2.9 million Palestinians and more than 630,000 Israeli settlers, is a patchwork of restricted zones. Approximately 61 percent of the territory is off-limits to Palestinians.
Checkpoints, roadblocks, and military incursions fragment the land, cutting off towns and villages from essential services, including healthcare and food markets. These barriers have led to critical shortages of water, fuel, and other supplies, and have obstructed Palestinians from reaching schools, workplaces, and loved ones.
In Masafer Yatta, a district within Hebron, roadblocks and military raids are common, with settlers frequently attacking Palestinians. These conditions have made accessing healthcare facilities nearly impossible. Local organizations struggle to provide basic health services due to funding shortages, Israeli military restrictions, and poor road infrastructure.
Living in Fear: The Inescapable Violence
The intensity of the violence in Masafer Yatta has forced many Palestinians to remain indoors, fearing for their safety. A resident recounts, “Most of the time, it is forbidden to stand at the window. One day, when I was at the window, a settler saw me and complained to the soldiers. They stormed my house and destroyed everything.”
In the northern districts of Jenin and Tulkarem, Israeli forces have been conducting regular raids, supported by air and drone strikes, resulting in numerous casualties. Settler violence in these areas further exacerbates the daily challenges faced by Palestinians. A third of the 479 Palestinians killed since October 2023 were from refugee camps around Tulkarem and Jenin.
The Vital Role of Donations in Supporting Life-Saving Work
Amidst this turmoil, donations play a crucial role in sustaining humanitarian efforts. Contributions help provide essential medical supplies, food, and water, offering a lifeline to those trapped in the conflict zone. Continued support from donors is vital to maintaining these life-saving operations and ensuring that the most vulnerable, especially children, receive the care and protection they desperately need.
Humanitarian organizations urge the international community to recognize the dire situation in the West Bank and to continue supporting efforts to alleviate the suffering of Palestinian families living under the shadow of war. Your donations can make a significant difference in the lives of those affected by this ongoing crisis.
